My name is Rory Taylor, I was born in Winterset, Iowa, July 1, 1960. I was raised in Bevington, Iowa and attended Martensdale-St. Mary’s Community Schools. I graduated in 1978 and attended Des Moines Area Community College for two years, earning an Associate of Arts Degree. I transferred to Iowa State University and Earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History, with a minor in Political Science. I also received my teaching and coaching certification. I have been an educator, served in the United States Army, worked at United Airlines for twenty-six years and Graybar Electric for eight years.
I have served in the Scouting movement for 20 years mentoring my son on his journey to Eagle Scout. While in Scouts I was a Cub Scout Den Leader and Assistant Cub Master. When my son bridged over to Boy Scouts, I became an Assistant Scoutmaster. I also served as a Unit Commissioner, Assistant District Commissioner and Commissioner for the Bo Qui and Twin Rivers Districts. I served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for the 2013 National Jamboree and the Contingent Leader for Mid Iowa Council at the 2017 National Jamboree.
I have lived in Norwalk, Iowa for the past thirty years with my wife Denise and raised both my children here, Matt and Amie. I belong to the Cumming American Legion Post 562, serving in the Honor Guard. I am a member of the International Association of Machinists, Iowa Genealogical Society and The Tall Dog Bike Club (Bicycle).
My roots run deep in the State of Iowa. My Great, Great, Great Grandfather Robert W. Lumpkin settled in Linn Township, Dallas County, Iowa in 1856. My Great, Great Grandfather Matthew A. Taylor settled in Squaw Township, Warren County, Iowa in 1866. His father brought him to Iowa with two of his brothers to settle on land his uncle had purchased. My family settled in the four Townships of Jackson, Virginia, Squaw and White Oak. My family has also done their part in the founding and defense of this Country. I had two Grandfathers serve in the Revolutionary War, one in the War of 1812, two in the Civil War. My Father and two of his younger brothers served in World War II, and his youngest brothers served in the Korean Conflict. As I mentioned before I served in the Army, a brother in the Navy and sister in the Marine Corps.
I was raised a Kennedy Democrat, during some of the most turbulent times in our Nation’s History. I lived through the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. Today’s world also has had its moments. I believe it’s time to put truth and accountability back in politics. Some of my priorities are to protect our public schools and educators. Also, the protection of Women’s Rights. We are a diverse culture, and we need to embrace our entire population.
